The story of The Gardeners Friend is a lot like many business ventures. Conceived by someone to solve a problem, a personal one and turning lemons into lemonade!
Without belabouring the issue, over the past 5 years my bodily mobility has declined in a number of ways.
No one want to hear people whine about their problems so I won’t.
Suffice to say, our pruners were developed as a solution for people with hand mobility problems.
This product allows people to garden semi normally even after diminished functionality on their arms and hands.
It is my story as well as that of thousand others and I am proud to say we have done something for ourselves and for thousands of other who share the same disabilities.
Our first product, the ratchet pruning shears, are now live and selling but this is just the start! We are actively seeking good quality and highly functional products for people with disabilities to allow them to garden.
What is you specific problem? Would you share it with us? Maybe it will be an idea for our next product (though we do have several more in the works as we speak).
You can find us almost anywhere on the web these days! Our goal is to build a community of people who share these problems and we are proud to be part of the solution.
We can’t cure arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome but if we can help someone with this debilitating disease to continue to experience the joy of being in the garden then our mission will have been achieved.

Benefits of Gardening for Seniors
Gardening is more than just a hobby; it’s a source of physical, mental, and emotional well-being. For seniors, gardening offers a gentle form of exercise that can improve strength, flexibility, and endurance. It’s a wonderful way to stay active and reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes. Beyond the physical benefits, gardening also promotes mental well-being by reducing stress and anxiety, boosting mood, and enhancing cognitive function. The social aspect of gardening, whether through community gardens or sharing tips with fellow gardeners, fosters a sense of connection and belonging. With the right support and tools, seniors can continue to enjoy the myriad benefits of gardening.

Safety and Accessibility
Safety and accessibility are paramount when it comes to gardening for seniors. Gardening in raised beds is an excellent solution for those who find bending or kneeling difficult. Additionally, tools with assisted action, such as ratchet pruning shears, make pruning and cutting easy, reducing the physical strain on your hands and wrists. By incorporating these tools and techniques, seniors can enjoy a safe and accessible gardening experience.
Choosing the Right Tools
Selecting the right garden tools for seniors is crucial for a comfortable and enjoyable gardening experience. Look for tools with ergonomic handles, non-slip grips, and heavy-duty nonstick steel blades that make gardening tasks easier and more efficient. Ratchet pruning shears, bypass pruners, and hand tools designed specifically for seniors are excellent choices. Additionally, consider affordably priced handheld tools that offer both comfort and functionality. By choosing tools that are designed with seniors in mind, you can continue to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of gardening while maintaining your independence and passion for nurturing your plants.

Pruning flowering shrubs and plants at the right time is crucial for their health and continued flowering. It is important to prune after the blooms of spring-flowering shrubs have faded. This timing ensures that the plants can grow healthily and produce more flowers in the next blooming season. Proper pruning techniques help maintain the shape and vigor of the plants, leading to a more beautiful and thriving garden.
